I was amazed when I found out how much this little trick can make a difference.
If you are running a box with a nic...and there are more each day, two things to bear in mind that will keep things connected.
1. Have the nic installed as close to pci #0 as possible....stare long on hard at the mommyboard if need be.
2. DO NOT install the nic in a pci slot that is adjacent to a ISA slot that has a card in it, nor the pci slot adjacent to the agp slot.
Rule number 2 applies even if you are using a mommyboard that uses interal video.
The workstation jockey at work spent two weeks over the CFO's machine trying to resolve a drop off the network issue. After he moved the card to pci #0, we cant make it crash or drop now.
