Parallel ports use 8 wires to transfer all 8 bits in a byte simultaneously. There are I think usually 3 circuits associated with a parallel circuit, but Spock will correct me if I'm wrong. One that sends the data (8 pins/wires + 1 "parity" pin + ground pins), the control circuit and the status circuit. These last two are used to communicate things about the data being sent, and when the system is ready/busy sending etc.
