Hi, In my 1.6Ghz machine I have a Pci BNC/rj45(10base) network card installed so I can connect to a BNC network.

The motherboard also has onboard 100base rj45, which I would also like to use alongside the other BNC card. I have installed drivers, but when in network/n it displays all the pc's on both networks, but I cannot access the one connected via the onboard card, it just says x cannot be found. Despite being able to access the other way.

Any ideas?

Hmm...can you explain how your network is set up?

Also, check for conflicting drivers from both network cards. Make sure you have the latest versions for both also.

I'm using Windows 98 SE.
I believe I have the newest drivers, and as far as I know their not conflicting.

To try and help explain how it's set up I've drawn a diagram (in paint!) etc which hopefully I'm going to get Spock to host so you can see.

When using RJ-45 cable between two computers only, you must use a cross-over cable. This cable switches the send/receive line so the two computers may "talk" to each other. If you cannot get a cross-over cable, I recommend you get a hub but then you will need to get another RJ-45 cable to connect the second computer.

Yes, like Spock said, you need a crossover cable to communicate both ways.

Also, I recommend removing your IP Addresses from the pic/text, since there are IP harvesters out there hunting you down now [;)]

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have tried creating the connection between 2 & 3 using crossover cable & also with a hub.

I should be ok with the ip addresses shouldn't I?, as they are only for my network, which cannot access the internet. (although are connected to a machine which has dial-up).

If you are using firewalls of any type (like Norton Internet Security?) you must set the IPs of the other machines as members of the Trusted Zone even when using internal only IPs.

I have absolutely no firewalls installed or any anti-virus progs which could be making any difference.

I'm drawing a blank at the moment then. I suppose you have tested the cables and verified they work elsewhere or when switched around?

I know the cables work as have had it working in a different config.

I'm not sure which PC3 is... did it work with your new hub? I'm betting its a problem with the onboard card on the one you got cheap from Mr. Pemberton. Did he ever say what was supposed to be wrong with it?

I haven't tried it with the new hub. It's not really a problem now as I can use the hub's BNC/RJ45 media converter meaning I don't need to use the onboard card at all. Yes it's the onboard card, the only thing wrong is the USB which seems flaky at best.
